TEARS OF GAZA

Disturbing, powerful and emotional, the Norwegian documentary Tears of Gaza documents with a minimum of gloss the 2008 to 2009 bombing of Gaza by the Israeli military. Photographed by Palestinian cameramen both during and after the offensive, this powerful film by director Vibeke Løkkeberg focuses on the impact of the attacks on the civilian population.

THE FILMMAKER

Vibeke Løkkeberg is a Norwegian actress, film director and author. She made her acting debut in 1967 with the feature film Liv. In the 70s she began to also direct and write films and documentaries becoming one of Norway’s most prominent filmmakers. Her husband and collaborator Terje Kristiansen produced her films. Vibeke’s movies and documentaries explore subjects that society wants to hide. Her mission as an artist is to look at the issues that affect her. “I want to be on the side of the victims, not the powerful.” Vibeke’s debut feature film, The Revelation caused controversy in Norway. The film shows a naked middle-aged woman. The film became Vibeke’s international breakthrough film. It was screened theatrically throughout Europe and the US. Kamila was invited to the 1982 Cannes Un Certain Regard and was released theatrically in the U.S. NY Times’ Vincent Camby wrote about Vibeke, “…a filmmaker of feeling and imagination. The performances are superior…” Hud was Vibeke’s second to be invited to the Un Certain Regard section at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. Her documentary Tears of Gaza profiles the impact of the brutal consequences of modern wars. It was invited to the Toronto International Film Festival and the Jerusalem Film Festival. Løkkeberg is also a leading writer. She has published novels including Leopard, Earth's Shadow, Purple, Letter to the Helmet and Allies.
